Wladimir Klitschko shut the gut out of David Haye as he unanimously won on decision the unification bout for the heavyweight titles last night in Germany. The hype made by Haye to upset Klitschko did not materialized as expected. The Ukrainian champion kept the Englishman at bay with crisp jabs and combinations. Haye was not in the mood to fight back. The Klitschko brothers now holds all the heavyweight division crowns.

Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye will slug it out in the unification bout for WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO and The Ring titles at Imtech Arena, Hamburg, Germany on July 2 (Saturday).

The Lakers' Kobe Bryant is the youngest NBA player to score 27,000 points.

Kobe Bryant surpassed Hakeem Olajuwon as the youngest NBA's all-time scoring leader in eight place after a 100-95 loss to the Sacramento Kings last Friday. The achievement highlights Kobe's prominence as one of NBA's prolific scorer and might even break other records as he still on his basketball prime.

The Los Angeles Lakers is on a slump with a two-loss streak with the latest setback coming from the Boston Celtics, 109-96 on Sunday. Bryant scored 41-points on this debacle to its fierce Eastern Conference rival Celtics and hit the 27,000 mark as the youngest NBA player to score this much.

Bryant hit his 26,947 points on a breakaway dunk with 3:29 remaining in their game against the Kings. The Black Mamba has a season-average of 25 ppg with still half of the season to be played. He can move to fifth place of the NBA's scoring list if he will maintain this same scoring output until the end of the season. Moses Malone occupies sixth place with 27,409 points while Elvin Hayes holds seventh spot with his 27,313 points.

Kobe Bryant has been an epitome of a great NBA scorer with his repertoire of moves. When he entered the NBA in 1996 fresh from high school, he was known only as dunker with his array of aerial moves. His moves has been as suave as the great Michael Jordan that focus more on fade away jump shots and post-up plays. The former NBA MVP has come to age on focusing more on high percentage shots from the field.

In the current season, Kobe is No. 5 in scoring with a .464 field goal percentage and .313 from the three point zone. At age 32, Kobe will still dominate the field with his competitiveness and clutch baskets. He is always working hard to fine tune his moves and basketball craft. In the NBA pre-season, Kobe worked with Hakeem "The Dream" to polish his post-up moves.

PHILADELPHIA(AP) Allen Iverson and the 76ers' reunion tour kicked off with a fantastic opening act.

A full house, video tribute and enough No. 3 jerseys in the crowd to fill two or three merchandise stands. Iverson kissed the 76ers logo, danced with his teammates and bowed to his adoring fans.

All they need to do now is work on the finish. Fans came for No. 3 and stayed for No. 10 - Philadelphia's 10th straight loss.

Chauncey Billups scored 31 points and Carmelo Anthony had 14 to help the Denver Nuggets spoil Iverson's return to Philadelphia with a 93-83 win over the 76ers on Monday night.

''I just felt like I was back home,'' Iverson said. ''It was deja vu. Just a real good feeling. The fans made it hard on me because they made me more nervous than I already was.''

The Nuggets did their share to ruin Iverson's homecoming. Denver scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to rally for its fourth straight win.

Iverson's old team improved to 16-5; his new-again team fell to 5-16.

''It was a positive experience to be part of A.I. returning,'' Nuggets coach George Karl said. ''I thought he fatigued as the game went on and we got the benefit of it. He's not in the best of shape yet.''

Iverson received a standing ovation when he left in the fourth quarter. He scored 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting and had six assists in 37 minutes.

Iverson's rousing return did little to mask the fact that the Sixers are a lousy team. Only one-win New Jersey has a worse record in the Eastern Conference.

''I haven't been here long enough to put a finger on one or two things (wrong),'' Iverson said.

''Tonight, with the way the guys competed, I don't know how they lost nine games in a row. I couldn't see it, not from the team I was playing with tonight. We'll get it together, believe me.''

Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 31 points, Thaddeus Young had 21 and Samuel Dalembert grabbed 15 rebounds.

But this night for the Sixers was all about Iverson in his first game with the team since he was traded in 2006. A sellout crowd of 20,664 stood and roared in approval when Iverson was introduced and planted the kiss on the centercourt logo.

Iverson missed his first shot, a makable layup early in the first quarter. His first points came off a 4-footer he tossed up off a Dalembert miss.

Energized by the emotional pregame show, the 76ers played one of their strongest quarters of the season. Iguodala, who bristled at the end of Iverson's first tenure at being labeled ''AI2,'' scored 14 points to show this was still his team.

It's still Iverson's crowd.

The building hummed every time he touched the ball, and each basket was cheered as if it were a playoff winner.

Iverson played sparingly in his three-game stint with Memphis and feared he'd be out of game shape for his debut. He played all but 1 second of the first quarter and sat out in the second half mostly because of three fouls by the middle of the third quarter.

Backed by 18 points from Iguodala and 10 from Thaddeus Young , the Sixers led 44-41 at the break.

They stretched that lead to nine when Iverson tossed a floater toward the basket that Dalembert slammed in for the alley-oop and had the Sixers feeling like their losing streak would be history.

Instead, only their lead evaporated.

Billups, traded from Detroit in last year's Iverson deal, showed why Denver was so eager to make the move. He sank a pair of 3s and worked his way to the free-throw line to score 13 points in the quarter and whittle the deficit to three.

Iverson was helpless in the fourth. Smith sank a pair of free throws to give Denver its first lead of the game, 67-65.

Billups and Smith each hit a 3 during a staggering 22-3 run that let the Nuggets take control of the game.

Billups nailed a late 3 for an 89-77 lead that sent the fans heading toward the exits.

''I was just being aggressive,'' Billups said. ''I knew Melo wasn't having a big night.''

The pregame show was worth the price of admission.

Iverson pulled in to the player's parking lot at 5:55 p.m., waving to fans who waited in the cold for a glimpse of one of the most polarizing athletes in Philadelphia's deep sports history.

He hit the court for warmups to the sound of fans screaming his name and holding ''Welcome Home'' signs. He hit shot after shot to the delight of the crowd and broke out in a wide smile as they erupted in cheers.

Iverson always considered Philly home and dreamed of a return to the team he led to the 2001 NBA finals.He just pictured a different outcome.

New Jersey Nets ties NBA's worst losing streak records

LOS ANGELES(AP) When the New Jersey Nets finally reached an inauspicious NBA record, the Staples Center's public address announcer let the crowd know all about it.

At least he had the tact to wait until the Nets were out of earshot after their 17th straight loss.

The undermanned, undertalented Nets matched the worst start to an NBA season Sunday night, with Kobe Bryant scoring 30 points in the Los Angeles Lakers ' 106-87 victory.

A few hours after New Jersey fired coach Lawrence Frank, the Nets had little prayer of keeping up with the defending league champions, who won their sixth straight game. Despite apparently playing hard for temporary head coach Tom Barrise, New Jersey fell behind by 27 points in the first half and went into history with yet another whimper.

''I wish I could explain it,'' said New Jersey guard Chris Douglas-Roberts, who only lost 10 games in his three collegiate seasons at Memphis. ''There's not really anything good out of this. I try to stay positive, but it's extremely hard to stay positive. All the things going on, it's depressing.''

The Nets were in the locker room, shaking their heads and packing for an uncertain trip home, before the crowd was told New Jersey's 0-17 start matched the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1999 Los Angeles Clippers in hoops futility.

''You have four-game losing streaks, three-game losing streaks, and you can deal with that,'' said Barrise, whose tenure might last just one game. ''When you go a whole month, you wake up and you feel it. You honestly do feel it.''

New Jersey must beat the Dallas Mavericks back home in the East Rutherford swamp on Wednesday night - perhaps while playing for the club's third coach in three games - to avoid sole possession of an embarrassing NBA record.

''I don't want to be associated with it,'' said Devin Harris , who scored 16 points for the Nets. ''That's one record you don't ever want to be a part of.''

The NBA's lowest-scoring and worst-shooting team lived up to its dire statistics, managing just 60 points on 38.7-percent shooting in the first three periods before a strong fourth quarter against Los Angeles' reserves. Although New Jersey consistently tried to match up on defense, the Nets don't have a fraction of the Lakers' talent.

''Obviously, we didn't want them to have a chance against us,'' said Pau Gasol , whose Memphis Grizzlies opened the 2003-04 season 0-13. ''We didn't want to fall asleep, or relax and lose.''

Gasol had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who cruised to their 12th win in 14 games. Jordan Farmar added 15 points as the Lakers made 13 of their 25 3-point attempts, including five by Bryant and three for Farmar.

Brook Lopez had 26 points and 12 rebounds for New Jersey, which went scoreless for nearly 4 1/2 minutes in the first quarter while Los Angeles posted 13 straight points to build a 27-10 lead.

Bryant's fourth 3-pointer of the first half put Los Angeles up 57-30 shortly before halftime. The Lakers led by 34 midway through the third quarter, and Bryant left the game with 4:14 left in the third.

''You don't wish that on anybody,'' Bryant said of the Nets' skid. ''That's tough.''
The Nets didn't wait until returning from their four-game West Coast trip before dumping Frank, the winningest coach in franchise history and the Eastern Conference's longest-tenured coach.

Although eight Nets already have missed multiple games this season with injuries after New Jersey traded star Vince Carter in the offseason, Frank was held responsible for the woeful start, which included three straight double-digit losses earlier on this trip.

Guard Rafer Alston compared the Nets' roster to an awful poker hand, saying Frank ''wasn't dealt a royal flush. It's almost like he had a pair of 2's, and he tried to fight.''

''The day started off with negative energy,'' said Douglas-Roberts, who had just five points on 2-of-11 shooting. ''A lot of the staff was sad. It was hard to prepare for today's game. ... We're letting this really affect us, but we're not using it as motivation. We're not using it in a good way, and it's showing.''

Barrise, Frank's assistant since the start of his tenure in early 2004, could be just a one-game replacement. Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe - who attended the game - and assistant John Loyer are considered the top candidates to replace Frank for the rest of the season.

''We're struggling, and it was a tough day,'' Barrise said. ''You lose your coach at 10 o'clock in the morning - you know, the guys are human. You lose a little bit of that focus. ... It's mentally a tough thing to deal with right now, but they're professionals, and they've been professionals all month long.''

Barrise made the most of perhaps his only chance to be an NBA head coach. The former bench boss at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., stood for nearly every minute of the game, clapping for his players' successes and stomping his feet in disgust at their many foibles.

''It's a difficult thing,'' Barrise said. ''But we have a great group of guys, and they're working hard at it.''

Kidd: NBA's second all-time assist leader

HOUSTON (AP) -- Jason Kidd moved into second place on the NBA's career assists list during the Dallas Mavericks' game with the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

Kidd had 10,330 assists entering the game, and needed five more to pass Mark Jackson (10,334). Kidd got No. 5 on an alley-oop pass to Rodrigue Beaubois for a dunk with 10:53 left in the third quarter.

John Stockton is the NBA's career assists leader (15,806).

Garnett in the nick of time

NEW YORK (AP) Paul Pierce carried the Celtics all game while the rest of the Big Three struggled.

So when it came time for the winning shot, of course Pierce would take it.

That's what the New York Knicks seemed to think, anyway.

Instead, Pierce swung it to a wide-open Kevin Garnett, whose jumper beat the overtime buzzer to give Boston a 107-105 victory Sunday.

“I knew they were going to sort of follow Paul and he's going to draw a lot of attention,” Garnett said, “and I just had to make the shot.”

Garnett hadn't made many, going 4 of 15 in what he said was an average to below-average performance. Yet Pierce suggested the final play to coach Doc Rivers and it worked perfectly.

“He's that type of player,” Pierce said. “You're talking about a Hall of Fame player. He's missed millions of shots. He's going to keep playing, going to keep taking shots when he gets an opportunity. He really stepped up big for our team when we needed it.”

Pierce scored a season-high 33 points, and had all of Boston's points in overtime until the final play. Two Knicks followed him, leaving Garnett alone at the top of the key for his 19-footer.

“I am expecting Pierce to try and make a move and pull up,” said David Lee, one of the defenders who followed Pierce.

“Good play by them and it's just unfortunate to lose a game like this.”

Garnett and Ray Allen had miserable shooting performances, but Rajon Rondo finished with 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds as Boston won for the second time in five games.

Reserve Al Harrington scored 30 points and Lee had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who had won their previous two games. They apparently were supposed to use their foul to give on the final play, a disappointing end to an otherwise strong performance.

“We wanted to give the foul if Paul Pierce was going to the hole but that never happened,” Harrington said. “It's frustrating, but we played extremely hard.”

The Celtics opened a big lead and blew all of it in a seesaw third quarter, then rallied to force overtime and improve to 17-4 against the Knicks since the 2004-05 season.

The Celtics, whom Rivers said had been playing “awful” recently, needed a big afternoon from Pierce while his remaining All-Star teammates struggled. Allen was 3 of 13 for his 13 points and Garnett scored 10.

Both made big shots late in regulation, though, and Kendrick Perkins chipped in with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

“We played better today. Not the way we'd like to, of course, but better,” Pierce said. “We're going to build on that. We're still a work in progess.”

Nate Robinson rebounded from his poor decision Saturday to shoot at the wrong basket with a strong game Sunday, scoring 19 points off the bench. The Knicks fell to 3-10 in the opener of consecutive games against the last two NBA champions; they start a three-game trip Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers .

“It makes it tough, because we're on the road right now in the West,” Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. “That's not fun. There are a lot of games, just as long as we keep playing and keep playing hard.”

Pierce's free throws capped an 11-0 run out of halftime and made it 67-53. The Knicks had more passes into the seats (2) than baskets (1) in the first four minutes of the third quarter, then suddenly turned it around as quickly as they'd fallen apart.

Harrington made three 3-pointers in a 20-6 surge that tied it at 75, Robinson made a 3 to snap a 77-all tie, and Harrington's follow shot made it 82-77 heading to the fourth.

New York led for nearly the entire period before Allen's 3-pointer gave Boston a 96-94 advantage with 2:47 left. Lee tied it again with 1:19 to play, but Garnett knocked down a jumper 12 seconds later.

The Knicks got the ball back following a couple of questionable calls and no-calls and tied it on Harrington's free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining. Rondo missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Eddy Curry had six points in his first home game since March 2008. He received a decent ovation when he checked in with 3:32 left in the first quarter, then departed after shoving Rondo down and getting whistled for a flagrant foul with 5:21 remaining in the fourth.

Clips anchors suspended for Iranian statement

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two Los Angeles Clippers basketball broadcasters were suspended one game by the Fox Sports Prime Ticket cable network for their comments about an Iranian-born NBA player.

Longtime play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler and color analyst Michael Smith made their off-the-cuff comments about the Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi during Wednesday night's telecast from Memphis. The on-air banter, which includes remarks to Borat actor Sacha Baron Cohen, offended a viewer who e-mailed Fox to complain.

The duo did not work Friday's night telecast against the Denver Nuggets at Staples Center. Michael Eaves and Don MacLean, who regularly serve as halftime and postgame analysts on the Clippers telecasts, substituted for Lawler and Smith at courtside.

Lawler, 71, is in his 31st season doing Clippers games, and Smith is in his 12th. Lawler has surpassed 2,400 regular season and playoff Clippers broadcasts in his career, according to the team's Web site.

"We regret the remarks made by Clippers announcers Michael Smith and Ralph Lawler during Wednesday's telecast," Fox said in a statement about 2½ hours before the game. "While we believe that Michael and Ralph did not intend their exchange to be offensive, the comments were inappropriate.

"We extend our apologies to Hamed Haddadi of the Memphis Grizzlies and to anyone who was offended. We have addressed the situation with Michael and Ralph and have taken appropriate action."

The Clippers did not comment.

The transcript of the conversation between Lawler and Smith, which occurred late in the game, was printed on the Los Angeles Times' Web site:

Smith: "Look who's in."

Lawler: "Hamed Haddadi. Where's he from?"

Smith: "He's the first Iranian to play in the NBA." (Smith pronounced Iranian as "Eye-ranian," a pronunciation that offended the viewer who complained.)

Lawler: "There aren't any Iranian players in the NBA," repeating Smith's mispronunciation.

Smith: "He's the only one."

Lawler: "He's from Iran?"

Smith: "I guess so."

Boxing immortalize Pacquiao; trounce Cotto

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Manny Pacquiao barged into boxing immortality by outgunning, outsmarting, and brutally busting up Cotto to become the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in as many weight classes. Pacquiao's speed and power were way too much for Miguel Cotto's heart.

Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round.

The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao's punches, but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

"I didn't know from where the punches were coming," Cotto said.

The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn't disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring before a roaring sellout crowd at the MGM Grand arena.

Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn't badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again.

Cotto won two rounds on the scorecards of two ringside judges and just one round on the card of the third. The Associated Press gave Cotto just the first round.

"Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time," Pacquiao said. "It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power."

Cotto's face was marked early and he was bleeding midway through the fight as Pacquiao kept bouncing around and throwing punches in his unorthodox southpaw style. Cotto tried to keep taking the fight to Pacquiao, but by then his punches had lost their sting and his only real chance was to land a big punch from nowhere.

"He hit harder than we expected and he was a lot stronger than we expected," Cotto's trainer, Joe Santiago, said.

Cotto fought gamely, but in the later rounds he was just trying to survive as blood flowed down his face and Pacquiao came after him relentlessly. Santiago tried to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back out to take even more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to end it.

Cotto's wife and child, who were at ringside, left after the ninth round, unable to watch the beating any longer. They later accompanied him to a local hospital for a post-fight examination.

"My health comes first. I just want to make sure I'm fine, but I feel great. I'm swollen but that's all," Cotto said.

His face swollen, Cotto was bleeding from his nose and his cuts, and he simply couldn't stop Pacquiao from bouncing inside and throwing both hands at will.

"Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought," Cotto said.
Pacquiao, coming off of spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title.

Pacquiao did it in his trademark way, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down. Then he pursued him nonstop until the end.

The fight likely will set up an even bigger one against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and many in crowd were already chanting, "We want Floyd! We want Floyd."

"I want to see him fight Mayweather," trainer Freddie Roach said.
Mayweather may have second thoughts after Pacquiao did what no fighter has done before -- win a belt in a seventh weight class. More impressive, though, is how he has fought, dismantling opponents despite moving up consistently from 106 pounds to the 144 he weighed for the fight.

The welterweight ranks will be the last ones Pacquiao conquers, though.

"This is the last weight division for me," Pacquiao said. "It's history for me and more importantly a Filipino did it."

He was so dominant in the later rounds that Cotto was fighting backward most of the way, simply trying to survive. Pacquiao was credited with landing almost twice as many punches -- 336-172 -- as Cotto.

"I knew when Cotto started backing up, the fight was over," Roach said.

Pacquiao earned a minimum $13 million, while Cotto got $7 million.

Pacquiao was favored, largely off his last two performances in which he forced De La Hoya to quit on his stool and then knocked out Hatton with a huge left hook in the second round. Some in boxing, including Roach, thought Cotto had been slowed by his devastating loss last year to Antonio Margarito and would be further slowed by having to come in 2 pounds lower than his normal weight.

That wasn't the case early in the fight, with Cotto winning the first round and fighting well. Once he was knocked down by a big left hand late in the fourth round, though, he slowed noticeably.

King James wants championships -- and max contract

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) -- LeBron James wants to be clear: Championships are more important than cash.

Not that the cash isn't nice.

James on Monday clarified a remark he made last week in which the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar said getting a maximum contract next summer isn't that important to him.

"Let's get this clear: I said the max contract doesn't mean more than winning," James said. "I didn't say, 'I don't need a max contract' or 'I'm not going to get a max contract.' All I'm saying is that winning is more important to me than money at the end of the day."

In New York for a game against the Knicks last week, James said "a max deal or anything like that doesn't really matter to me at the end of the day. It's all about winning for me."

That led to speculation that James, who can opt out of his contract with the Cavaliers after this season, would be willing to play somewhere for less than the league maximum.

Richardson snaps Celtics winning streak

BOSTON – Jason Richardson and the Phoenix Suns snap Boston Celtics winning streak at six games with a 110-103 victory on Friday night at TD Garden.

This is Richardson’s most productive game with 34 points and 10 rebounds after he went 0-for-4 in a loss to the Orlando Magic, his third game after suspended by the NBA for drunken driving charges. He finished the game 6-for-7 from the 3-point stripe.

The Sun’s ended the Celtics three game winning streak against them.

Steve Nash contributed 16 points and 12 assists for the Suns. He hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining with Boston cutting down an 11-point lead to four points.

Kevin Garnett led the Celtics with a season-high 26 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. This is his most offensive night after missing the latter part of the 2008-2009 regular season and the playoffs after injuring his right knee.

The loss snaps the Celtics’ 12-game regular-season home wining streak since last season.

Ray Allen and Paul Pierce each scored 16 points for the Celtics. Rasheed Wallace was limited to only eight points, missing all of six 3-point attempts in the game.

Pacman is the second non-heavyweight boxer to land as cover for Time magazine. He was the second Filipino after the former Pres. Corazon Aquino was named Time’s “Woman of the Year” in 1986.

The Time pays tribute to the Filipino southpaw with a story entitled “The Meaning of Manny”. He was given the accolade as the “the latest savior of boxing.”

The magazine features Pacquiao’s humble beginnings, his stature as the Philippines’ icon of pride and hope, boxing accomplishments, his family, and other personal features.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada dubbed as “Firepower”.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hideki Matsui has the most curious habit at the plate. He never takes a practice swing once he steps into the batter's box.

He saves all those meaty cuts for when they count.

Matsui did all sorts of damage Wednesday night, setting a record with six RBIs in a World Series clincher and leading the New York Yankees over the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3.

His performance won Game 6 -- and clinched the MVP trophy.

Matsui became the first Japanese-born player to win the award that started in 1955. He homered, doubled and singled, highlighting a Series in which he hit .615 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

"It's awesome," Matsui said through a translator. "Unbelievable. I'm surprised myself."

Standing on a podium in shallow center field, Matsui waved his new championship hat and shook hands with Commissioner Bud Selig. Matsui won three titles in Japan and was eager to celebrate his first in the Bronx.

"I guess it's hard to make a comparison. When I was in Japan, that was the ultimate goal. Being here, winning the World Series, becoming world champions, that's what you strive for here."

"You could say that I guess this is the best moment of my life right now," he said. "It's been a long road and very difficult journey."

Matsui's two-run drive off Pedro Martinez in the second inning put the Yankees ahead for good. Nicknamed "Godzilla" back home, Matsui sent a shot to right field that banged off an advertisement on the facing of the second deck -- fittingly, it was a sign for the Japanese company Komatsu, which makes mining and construction equipment.

Matsui added a two-run single in the third and lined a two-run double off the right-center field wall in the fifth. The giant videoboard in center field showed fans holding Japanese signs and while the sellout crowd roared, he stood placidly at second base.

Fans cheered when Matsui's feat, matching Bobby Richardson's 1960 mark for RBIs in any Series game, was posted on the scoreboard. No one, however, had ever delivered such a bounty in the game that wrapped up a championship.

Matsui drew a standing ovation when he came to bat in the seventh, and chants of "MVP! MVP!" bounced around the ballpark.

"He hit everything we threw up there," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Watching Game 6 on TV in Tokyo, Masanori Murakami echoed that sentiment. He was the first Japanese player in the majors, in 1964 with San Francisco, and fully appreciated the magnitude of Matsui's honor.

"Ichiro Suzuki has had many accomplishments, but they've all been in the regular season. As the first Japanese to win an MVP in the World Series, this is a great accomplishment for Matsui and will have a huge impact," Murakami said.

"New York is a tough place to play, so this is a great achievement for him given all he has been through with injuries and missing time," he said.

An outfielder by trade, Matsui hasn't played the field since June 15, 2008, because of bad knees. He hit .274 this year with 28 homers and 90 RBIs, and wasn't much of a force in the AL playoffs against Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels.

That changed against the defending champion Phillies.

Now strictly a DH and pinch-hitter because of bad knees, Matsui accomplished a lot in a hurry. His 13 at-bats tied Baltimore's Rick Dempsey in 1983 for the fewest by a Series MVP (nonpitchers only, naturally), according to STATS.

"He has been a clutch player ever since I've known him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Matsui became the first player to win the award as a full-time DH in the Series. Toronto DH Paul Molitor played in the field when the Blue Jays won the 1993 title.

"Oh my goodness. You can't say enough about Matsui all year," Yankees star Mark Teixeira said. "The biggest game of the year, unbelievable. I haven't seen a guy hit like that in the World Series."

Matsui became the 11th Yankees player to win the award, joining teammates Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, along with the likes of Reggie Jackson and Whitey Ford.

At 35, Matsui's greatest achievement might've come in his last game in pinstripes.

Matsui hit a grand slam in his first game at old Yankee Stadium in 2003 -- just like Wednesday night, New York won 7-3 and Pettitte got the victory.

This year wrapped up Matsui's $52 million, four-year contract. It remains to be seen what the aging Yankees will do with Matsui.

Whatever happens, he certainly left his mark.

"I hope so. I hope it works out that way," he said. "I love New York, I love the Yankees."

Yankees secure 27th World Series diadem

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Yankees christened the first season in their new ballpark the same way they opened their old stadium in 1923: with a World Series championship.

Hideki Matsui's record night powered the offense, Andy Pettitte held Philadelphia's offense in check and Derek Jeter started a pair of key rallies with base hits, as the Yankees beat the Phillies 7-3 to win their 27th title and first since 2000, a relatively long drought by this storied franchise's standards (BOX SCORE).

Matsui was named the World Series MVP after batting .615 with three home runs, the second designated hitter to be so honored.
"Winning the championship is such a great feeling," Matsui said through an interpreter. "I guess you can say that this is the best moment of my life right now."

Jeter, Pettitte and catcher Jorge Posada are veterans of the Yankees' run of four championships in five years from 1996-2000. Also part of those teams, of course, was closer Mariano Rivera, who pitched 1 2/3 innings to finish Wednesday night's Game 6. It was the fourth time Rivera has recorded the last out of the World Series, inducing Shane Victorino to groundout to Robinson Cano at second base as the Yankees poured out of the dugout in celebration before the throw even reached first base.

On a cold November evening, matching the latest date a World Series game had ever been played, Pettitte allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings to extend his postseason records for career wins (18) and series-clinching wins (six). Pettitte also won the final game of all three playoff rounds, matching Boston's Derek Lowe in 2004 as the only pitchers to do so.

"If you pitch, you have a chance to win," said Jeter. "You guys say I always give the same answer, but it's the right answer."
Jeter singled twice, doubled and scored two runs, batting .407 for the Series.

But it was Matsui's mighty swings in the early innings that buried the Phillies, as Godzilla finally conquered New York. He tied the World Series record set by the Yankees' Bobby Richardson in 1960 with six RBIs while going 3-for-4 with a single, double and a home run, to earn his first World Series ring after winning three Japan Series titles with the Yomiuri Giants.
Matsui's surgically repaired knee prevented him from playing the field at all and, thus, from starting the three games in Philadelphia where he could not serve as the designated hitter but contributed as a pinch hitter, even homering in Game 3.

"My first and foremost goal when I joined the Yankees was to win the world championship," Matsui said. "Certainly it's been a long road and very difficult journey. I'm just happy after all these years we were able to win and reach the goal that I had come here for."

In the bottom of the second Matsui turned on a full-count, 89-mile-per-hour heater that Martinez left over the middle of the plate and crushed a deep home run inside the rightfield foul pole on the eighth pitch of the at-bat.

The Yankees struck again in the third, as Jeter led off with a liner into centerfield that Victorino narrowly missed, scooping it up on a short hop for a single. Martinez then walked Johnny Damon and hit Mark Teixeira with a pitch, loading the bases with one out. Martinez nearly escaped trouble, catching Alex Rodriguez looking with a breaking ball on the outside corner for the second out, but Matsui made him pay. On 0-2 Martinez threw a fastball some eight inches off the plate, but Matsui somehow reached across and punched it into centerfield for the two-RBI single.

Matsui continued his curious postseason success against Martinez. Though he's just 4-for-28 against Martinez in regular-season games, Matsui is now 9-for-19, with six extra-base hits (four doubles, two homers) in playoff games.

"Mattie has been a clutch player ever since I met him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Godzilla struck again off in the fifth off the bullpen. Jeter started the inning with a ground-rule double off reliever Chad Durbin and later scored on a Teixeira single. Matsui followed a few batters later with a two-RBI double off lefty J.A. Happ, who was brought in to face him, the final hit of a wild night and terrific series for the Japanese legend.

"They're partying in Tokyo tonight," Yankees rightfielder Nick Swisher said. "What a great job Matsui did for us. He came up clutch for us all year long. He deserved that MVP trophy, there's no doubt about it."

The Phillies chipped a run off the early lead in the top of the third. Catcher Carlos Ruiz tripled on a ball off the left-centerfield wall and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Rollins. It was Ruiz's fifth hit of the Series and fourth for extra bases.

Ryan Howard hit an opposite-field, two-run homer in the top of the sixth, cutting New York's lead to 7-3.

Game 6 featured a pitcher's duel between veteran stars who first faced each other in 1998 and regularly renewed battles during the tense Boston-New York rivalry games earlier this decade, when Martinez was with the Red Sox. Martinez got the loss, completing only four innings and allowing four runs.

Martinez left Yankee Stadium before clubhouses opened to the media, making only a few comments on his way out.

"I'm extremely proud," Martinez said, "... [but] they got me."

The Phillies had been the defending World Series champions but failed to become the first team this decade to repeat, after winning 93 games and their third straight NL East title. A lack of timely hits and poor starting pitching beyond ace Cliff Lee ultimately did them in.

"That just makes us more determined to come back next year," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

It was not only the first World Series title for Matsui, but also for Rodriguez, Teixeira, Swisher and starters CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, New York's prized free-agent signings. Their pitching turned around the Yankees' recent postseason misfortune in which they had won just four of their previous 17 playoff games.

"You play a lot of years to try and get here," Teixeira said. "Once you're here, it's unbelievable. Why wear the pinstripes if you're not going to win championships -- that's what the Yankees are all about."

It was also the first managerial ring for Girardi, who had donned uniform No. 27 to signal his pursuit of the franchise's 27th title.

As the game ended, the scoreboard flashed a message that "This one's for the Boss," a reference to ailing owner George Steinbrenner.
"I hope he feels special," his son Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees' general managing partner, said on the field. "This team, the entire postseason, has been focused, to win this for him."

Toyota quits Formula 1

TOKYO (espnstar.com) - Toyota has announced that they are to leave Formula 1, blaming the economic downturn for their decision.

The announcement was made at a media conference in Tokyo by Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda.

The world's largest car maker is now the third major manufacturer to withdraw from F1 in the space of 11 months after Honda and BMW.

Toyota's departure continues the exodus of Japanese companies from motor sport as Subaru and Suzuki withdrew from the World Rally Championship prior to this season.

In motorbikes, Kawasaki pulled out of MotoGP, and on Monday tyre manufacturer Bridgestone announced they will not be renewing their supply contract in F1 after next season.

A statement read: "Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces it plans to withdraw from the FIA Formula One World Championship at the end of the 2009 season.

"TMC, which had viewed its participation in F1 as contributing to the prosperity of automotive culture, remained dedicated to competing at the pinnacle of motor sports, even in the face of the abrupt economic changes that started last year.

"However, when considering TMC's motor-sports activities next year and beyond from a comprehensive mid-term viewpoint reflecting the current severe economic realities, TMC decided to withdraw from F1.

"TMC leaves F1 having compiled 13 podium and 87 point finishes over eight challenging seasons since 2002 with Panasonic Toyota Racing, a full-constructor team.

"It views its time in F1 - in which teams put forth their best efforts to fiercely compete at racing's highest level - as an irreplaceable experience that provided an opportunity to develop both human resources and its R&D operations.

"TMC expresses its deepest appreciation to its F1 fans and others for their warm support."

"TMC also wants to express its heartfelt gratitude to all Panasonic Toyota Racing drivers to date, and to all Toyota Motorsport employees who have helped make the team's achievements possible.

"TMC intends to do its best to find a solution for those parties who will be affected by any inconvenience this decision may cause.

"Drawing on its experience in F1 and other motor sports, TMC intends to move forward in developing exciting production vehicles, such as the Lexus 'LFA' supercar and compact rear-wheel-drive sports cars.

"In motor sports, it will not only race in various categories, but will also actively contribute to further development of motor sports by supporting grassroots races and planning events in which it is easy for people to participate."

Speculation surrounding Toyota's future was rife throughout the year, in particular after the parent company announced the worst financial losses in its history in March.
Further significant losses are expected to be revealed on Thursday, and this has forced Toyoda, grandson of the company's founder, and his board of directors to act.

In July, and due to the global financial crisis, Toyota-owned Fuji International Speedway confirmed they would not host the Japanese Grand Prix next year.

However, Toyota signed a new Concorde Agreement with motor sport's governing body, the FIA, over the summer, tying them to Formula One through to 2012. It appeared at that stage any doubts as to their future had been erased.

Toyota's departure does at least open the door for Sauber to take up the now vacant 13th position on the grid.

After BMW confirmed their own withdrawal from the sport at the end of July, with their final race the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, it left Sauber fighting for survival.

They were eventually taken over by Qadbak Investments Ltd in mid-September, just hours after Lotus were awarded the 13th slot.

The FIA agreed to the possibility of 14 teams competing in F1 next season on the proviso of there being unanimous agreement from all the other marques, which was not forthcoming.

It left Sauber playing an anxious waiting game these past few weeks, one that is finally over in the wake of Toyota's exit.

Following a strong start to the season, Toyota went on to finish fifth in this year's constructors' championship.

However, since their arrival in F1 in 2002 they failed to win a grand prix in 140 attempts, with the team's best result the back-to-back second places by Jarno Trulli in Malaysia and Bahrain in 2005.

It leaves drivers Trulli, Timo Glock and Kamui Kobayashi in limbo, although it was expected neither the veteran Italian nor the German would be re-signed.

Toyota's decision is particularly hard on Kobayashi who had driven superbly in the final two races in the absence of the injured Glock.

That led to Toyota Motorsport boss John Howett confirming in Abu Dhabi on Sunday the Japanese was "70 to 80% certain" of being given a contract for next year.

Just three manufacturers now remain in F1 - Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Renault - with the focus likely to switch to the latter in light of their previously precarious circumstances.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Ron Artest finally got to experience what it's like to be on the same team when Kobe Bryant finishes off a win.

Bryant scored 31 points including the go-ahead jumper in overtime as the Los Angeles Lakers got tested in their first road game of the season, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 on Tuesday night.

Bryant connected on a turnaround jumper from the left side with 2:29 to play to give the defending NBA champions a 99-97 lead and then hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to push the lead to three.

The Thunder had two chances to tie it late, but Thabo Sefolosha and Russell Westbrook each missed 3-pointers surrounding a pair of missed free throws by Lamar Odom .

Kevin Durant led Oklahoma City with 28 points but airballed a pair of shots that could have given the Thunder the lead in the closing minute of regulation and overtime.

He dribbled the ball to run down the final few seconds of the fourth quarter before coming up empty on a deep 3-pointer from the right wing with 2.7 seconds left, but Sefolosha stole the Lakers' ensuing inbounds pass to send the game to overtime.

Durant then had an airball on a 17-footer from the right side in the final 30 seconds of overtime that could've put Oklahoma City ahead again. Bryant was fouled intentionally and hit two free throws to provide the final margin.

Andrew Bynum added 22 points and 10 rebounds, Artest scored 20 and Odom had 13 points and eight rebounds while starting again in place of the injured Pau Gasol .

Jeff Green had 18 points for Oklahoma City while Westbrook and Sefolosha each scored 12.

The Lakers have won their last 10 games against the Thunder franchise, dating back to its days in Seattle.

Cleveland Cavaliers 102, Washington Wizards 90

CLEVELAND(AP) Shaquille O'Neal has always felt like when he gets the ball down low, within a few feet of the basket, he should score every time.

The Cavaliers just got him, and they're not about to let him go.

O'Neal had easily his best game since joining Cleveland, scoring a season-high 21 points while wearing out Washington's big men and LeBron James scored 27 points as the Cavaliers won their third straight, beating the Wizards 102-90 on Tuesday night.

Hitting bank shots. Dropping hooks. Making free throws. Dominating.

For the first time with the Cavaliers, Shaq was Shaq.

The Cavs have been using the 7-foot-1 O'Neal and his 7-foot-3 backup, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, together with mixed results. But the pair are getting more comfortable and confident with every second they spend on the floor and have the potential to be a matchup nightmare for any team.

Brown has never had a weapon like O'Neal. When asked what it's like to have such a big interior threat, Cleveland's coach just smiled.

Mo Williams scored 15 and Daniel Gibson 14 for the Cavs, who made nine 3-pointers in the second half - four in the fourth quarter when James was out. Cleveland held the Wizards to just 36 points in the second half and only 59 over the final three quarters.

Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas scored 22 apiece to lead the Wizards.

Celt's Rasheed trounce hometown Sixers

PHILADELPHIA(AP) Rasheed Wallace keeps making his hometown his stomping ground.

Wallace rooted on the Phillies at Game 5 of the World Series and he popped by to watch Philly boxing great Bernard Hopkins train for an upcoming bout.

Boston's top reserve didn't stop having fun just because it was time to play. Wallace hit six 3-pointers as part of a 20-point effort and the Celtics remained unbeaten with a 105-74 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night.

''It's home,'' Wallace said. ''A lot of friends and family don't get the opportunity to see me play. Everybody can't get that league pass and all that stuff. It's always fun to come back here and play.''

Wallace, who wore a black Phillies jacket to the game, easily had his best game in his short stint with the Celtics. He pretty much caught the ball, let it rip and watched it sink through the net. Wallace made 6 of 8 3-pointers and sank each long attempt about as easily as a layup in the paint.

Wallace was about the only Celtic who had his normal night, even getting whistled for a technical foul for arguing with the refs in the third quarter. His fuse burst late in the quarter when he appeared to be fouled on a shot. The ref called a foul, he just didn't call it a shooting foul and denied Wallace a trip to the free-throw line.

Wallace kept badgering the refs over the perceived blown call until he was hit with the T with 4.5 seconds left in the third.

''I just wanted to get my point across,'' Wallace said. ''I wasn't going to get thrown out.''

Paul Pierce scored 21 points as the Celtics improved to 5-0 even without the usual standout performances from Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen .

''We're going to win because of our defense no matter how good our offense is,'' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Allen didn't score his first field goal until the third quarter and had five points. Garnett made just one basket on seven shots and scored three points when he was yanked with the game out of hand.

By the time Wallace got his technical, the game had spiraled into a blowout. Allen scored his first basket and Pierce hit a 3-pointer in a 14-2 run to open the quarter that shook off the Sixers for good.

Eddie House made four 3s off the bench for the Celtics and scored 12 points. Shelden Williams added 11 points, helping the Celtics bench to a productive night after the starters and Wallace made this one a rout.

Boston went 14 for 20 from 3-point range. The Sixers failed to hit a 3 until Jrue Holiday made one with 1:28 left in the game. The basket only cut Boston's lead to 102-71.

Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 17 points. Philadelphia missed 15 of 16 3-point attempts.

Thaddeus Young was the only other Sixer in double digits, scoring 11 points as they snapped their modest two-game winning streak.

The Sixers have struggled in two losses against the elite teams in the Eastern Conference (Orlando, Boston).

''They are veterans and we know they know how to play together,'' Young said.

Wallace, friends with Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, didn't offer a World Series prediction. The Yankees hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

''We've got the bats for it, we've got the pitching for it,'' Wallace said.

He was also smart enough to stay out of Hopkins way during an afternoon visit at a local boxing gym. Hopkins, who attended the game, will fight Enrique Ornelas in a light heavyweight bout on Dec. 2 at Temple's Liacouras Center.

''Nah, I didn't get in the ring with him this time,'' Wallace said. ''He's got a fight coming up and I didn't want to damage him or nothing.''

Instead, he saved his blows for the 76ers.

Boston Celtics sting Hornets 97-87 to improve 4-0

Chris Paul had 22 points and eight assists for New Orleans, and then had to be held back after the game when he tried to follow the Celtics off the court to their locker room. Paul and Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo also exchanged words in the second quarter, drawing matching technical fouls.

Ray Allen scored 17, Kevin Garnett had 14 and Rondo had 10 assists for Boston, which pulled away with an 11-3 run in the last 4 minutes.

Peja Stojakovic scored 26 as a reserve for New Orleans. Emeka Okafor had 10 rebounds for New Orleans.

Heat 95, Bulls 87

At Miami, Dwyane Wade scored 25 points to push his career total to 10,005, while Udonis Haslem had 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as Miami improved to 3-0.

Carlos Arroyo scored 12 points; Mario Chalmers added 11 and Michael Beasley overcame a 3-of-12 shooting night to finish with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who took the lead for good on a jumper by Wade with 3:01 remaining.

Roy made just four of his first 16 shots before finally finding a way to hurt Oklahoma City at the free throw line. While Kevin Durant continued to misfire on jump shots for the Thunder, Roy worked his way into the lane repeatedly to earn trips to the foul line and help Portland inch away.

His three-point play off a driving layup gave the Trail Blazers a 70-62 lead with 3:59 to play.

Miami Heat star Wade hits 10,000 career points

He's the 43rd active NBA player to top the 10,000-point plateau.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Alex Rodriguez delivered the biggest hit of his career, a go ahead two-out double in the ninth inning off Brad Lidge as the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Sunday night for a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

Derek Jeter delivered all game and Mariano Rivera closed it out as the Yankees moved within one win of their 27th championship, and first since 2000. Rodriguez could really savor this victory — seething after again being hit by a pitch, he struck back with his bat.

"There's no question — I've never had a bigger hit," Rodriguez said.

The Yankees will try to clinch it Monday night when A.J. Burnett faces October ace Cliff Lee.

Of the 42 teams to take a 3-1 lead in the World Series, 36 went on to win the crown. The last club to overcome such a deficit was Kansas City in 1985.

Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz hit late home runs for the Phillies that tied it at 4. Then it moved to the ninth and Phils brought in Lidge — a postseason star last year, he had struggled all season before regaining his touch this October.

But November was not so kind to him.

Lidge had been the only closer in the playoffs who hadn't allowed a run until the Yankees tagged him. With two outs, Johnny Damon capped a nine-pitch at-bat with a single. The Phillies overshifted their infield to the right side for Mark Teixeira and Damon took off.

Damon beat the one-hop throw to steal second, popped up from his slide and noticed no one was covering third. That's because Feliz had handled the throw, and Damon easily beat the third baseman to the bag for a rare double-steal.

Rattled or whatever, Lidge hit Teixeira with a pitch. So up stepped Rodriguez, 1 for 13 to that point in his first World Series and looking nothing like the feared slugger he was earlier in these playoffs.

Putting all his past postseason failures behind, Rodriguez lined a solid double into the left-field corner for a 5-4 lead. Maybe it wasn't such a surprise — Rodriguez had homered and doubled in three prior at-bats against Lidge.

"I get a good pitch and put a good swing on it, good things usually happen," Rodriguez said. "Facing Brad Lidge, he's a great competitor. He's had a lot of success late here. Just trying to make contact there."

Rodriguez stood at second with his 15th RBI, tying the Yankees postseason record shared by Bernie Williams and Scott Brosius. A-Rod's other hit this week came in Game 3 when his double was changed to a home run after an instant replay review.

The crowd was silent when Jorge Posada followed with a two-run single. And just like that, the Yankees were on the verge of celebrating and the defending champion Phillies were on the brink of losing the series.

Feliz rocked Yankees setup man Joba Chamberlain with a two-out, solo home run in the eighth that tied it at 4.

Utley homered again off CC Sabathia, finishing the New York starter in the seventh. It was Utley's third shot off Sabathia in this Series and closed the Phillies to 4-3.

Expect more drama in F1 races in 2010 with new faces in different F1 teams. Are Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya set to race again in F1 next season?

It is just that the current F1 teams will have different drivers for their cars in 2010. Team Williams will announce on Monday that it will be introducing new drivers for their new Cosworth-powered cars in 2010. It might be Rubens Barrichello of Team Brawn will be joining the team. Speculations were raised that the Brazilian will drive for the team next season after his stint with Brawn GP. Joining Barrichello at Williams will be Nico Hulkenberg, a 22-year old German currently driving for GP2. Williams driver Nico Rosberg announced that this season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be his final race with the team. He is set to join one of the Mercedes-powered team of either McLaren or Brawn.

Rober Kubica has turned down offers from Toyota and instead joined Renault. Toyota has been making offers to other drivers like Kimi Raikonnen but unsuccessful with their attempts. Their current drivers, Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli, announced that they were likely to leave the team.

It will be another wild and bumpy finished for F1 teams in season 2010.

Celtics dethrone King LeBron and Shaq in NBA opening night

Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics bested the Cleveland Cavaliers on NBA opening night with a 95-89 win on one of the NBA's most hyped games of the season. Both teams paraded their new recruits and got both positive and negative results of their new acquisition.

New Celts Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels played a well-complemented game with their new team, thus, giving Boston a new sense of swagger in their quest for another Boston championship. Wallace contributed 12 points in the frontcourt and Daniels backstopped Rajon Rondo with 7 points and 2 assists.

Kevin Garnett returned to his old form with a 13 markers, 10 caroms and 3 block shots in a 33- minute all around play after sidelined last season with a knee injury. KG is back and he means serious business. Pierce led the Celtics with with 23 points and Ray Allen contributed 16 points for a balanced offensive game for the Celts.

Shaq and the Cleveland Cavaliers have to make major adjustments on both offensive and defensive end of the court. The combination of the Big Aristotle and Zydraunas Ilgauskas on the floor was not a good option for the Cavs. The Cavs lacks outside shooting missing the service of Delonte West. However, LeBron James is the greatest performer of the night with almost a triple double performance of 38 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, and four blocked shots.

The Celtics are back on track for an NBA championship run with a win over a perennial rival in the Eastern Conference. They look good with their new acquisitions even if the Celts are the older team. The Cavaliers will have to make all the necessary adjustments at this early stage of the season if they are serious with their NBA championship bid, if not it will still be a King James one-man show.

Burger King's Arboleda banned in the 35th PBA season

Wynne Arboleda, the pesky pointguard of Burger King Whoppers in the PBA, is barred from playing in the 35th PBA season after mauling a courtside fan during a game between Smart Gilas NT and Burger King. The suspension came after Comm. Sonny Barrios meted him the heaviest sanction the PBA has given to its professional players.

Arboleda's suspension will lose him 2.73 million pesos in salary and bonuses for the rest of the season. He will not be able to play in other leagues since he has a live contract with Burger King. He will also be barred from watching live PBA games during his suspension period. The Snatcher, his PBA monicker, is already 33 years old and will have a difficult time to earn his spot with the team next season. There were talks that the player might have been traded prior to this fracas to Red Bull Barako.

The PBA Commissioner's Office also released a press statement that PBA players whom will have the same gravity of offense made during the course of their careers will be banned for life from the professional league.

Arboleda's victim, Alain Katigbak, is set to file criminal and moral damages against the cager in court.

Burger King Whopper’s Wynne Arboleda mauls a courtside fan

Burger King Whopper’s pointguard Wynne Arboleda is not a basketball player! He should be in the weight division of prominent boxers Manny Pacquioa, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Miguel Marquez. Did I say pointguard? How come we are talking about the gladiators of boxing?

Last night’s Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game (Oct 16) between Burger King Whoppers and Smart Gilas National Team is in for the records of Philippine basketball. It was an ugly incident involving Arboleda and a PBA patron in a one-sided brawl. It is a case of a professional player losing his cool after incurring two flagrant fouls on his opponents and heckled afterward.

Arboleda, one of PBA’s most pesky and physical defender, punched a PBA fan named Alain Katigbak in the face with his knuckles and elbow. He was also seen planting a kick in the midsection of the fan who’s watching in the sidelines. The fan suffered abrasions and lumps on his face.

The altercation started when Arboleda was called for a flagrant foul on Gilas’ player Mac Baracael. He gave the young kid a football tackle which downed the young Gilas on all fours. After that, he was heckled by Mr. Katigbak which could have irked the PBA player. He was restrained by security men and referees from inflicting additional blows to the fan.

But does Arboleda have the right to punch and kick a paying patron? This incident reminds me of LA Laker’s Ron Artest case when he was still playing for Indiana Pacers. He also mauled an NBA fan up the bleachers. Artest was suspended for 25 games as imposed by the NBA’s commissioner.

Burger Kings’ Arboleda is a professional player and must have kept his cool under those circumstances. Yes, tempers were very high but still he should have behaved like a professional one. Basketball players with this kind of attitude must be penalized and counseled. If they can hurt fans, what will a rookie professional team like Smart Gilas expect from this lousy player? We all know that basketball has lots of physical contacts but players should understand the extent of their actions. They should avoid unnecessary actions which could injure or impair players’ lives. Younger players emulate these professional PBA players and should avoid such kind of ugly confrontations with fans.

PBA player Arboleda could face stiff sanctions for his conduct. It could suspend him for the rest of the season or ban him from playing in the PBA. Assaulting someone is a criminal act. He could be imprisoned for that demeanor which is beyond the PBA’s authority.

He could ask Manny Pacquioa on how it is playing in front of a rowdy crowd of hecklers. Professional boxers are more expose to this kind of fanatics’ behavior but still they keep their cool. I think even professional boxing authorities will not accept Wynne Arboleda to play as a professional boxer based on the merits of his present squabble.

Basketball is not a boxing match. If he does not want to be heckled, then he plays chess instead.

Boston Celtics trashed the Toronto Raptors in NBA preseason game

Paul Pierce lead the Boston Celtics with 17 points to trashed the Toronto Raptors, 106-90, in their preseason game at XL Center, Hartford, Connecticut.

It was also a sort of homecoming for Ray Allen who used to play for UConn at this center. His former UConn coach Jim Calhoun is in attendance to watch the game. Ray Allen scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and feeds four assists.

Kevin Garnett was also in his element by scoring 16 points to offset Raptor's Chris Bosh 21 points. Garnett received an alley-oop play for a dunk from Rajon Rondo with 5:12 to play in the first quarter. The Boston Celtics bench and coaching staff have an anxious moment late in the 2nd quarter when Garnett was hit on the right calf off a Bosh steal. He smacked on the floor holding his knees. He stayed in the game after that moment.

Vince Carter: Magic’s missing spell?

After Orlando Magic lost its second franchise NBA Finals to Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, they added Vince Carter to their lineup in a trade with the New Jersey Nets in the off-season. Vinsanity’s addition to the Magic’s roster gave it another go-to-guy scorer after losing Hedo Turkoglu to free agency. Will Carter spellbinds other team to help the Magic win its first NBA championship?

Carter is a proven scorer and a 8-time All Star selection member. In 2000, along with Tracy McGrady, they gave the Toronto Raptors its first playoff appearance but were eliminated by the New York Knicks. He also guided the New Jersey Nets to a playoff berth in 2006 and lost to eventual NBA champion Miami Heat. There is no doubt about Carter’s ability to score and leadership, however, different injuries has slowed him from being one of the most exciting and explosive players of the NBA.

Vinsanity has a better offensive repertoire compared to Turkoglu but more inferior on defense. However, his addition to the Magic’s roster will give it an almost All Star cast of Jameer Nelson, Rashard Lewis, and Dwight Howard. This is a very young All Star team which can match up any NBA team.

Carter’s leadership is questionable during the playoffs. He was able to help his previous teams achieve some feats in the regular season. Does he lack maturity leading his teams to playoff games? He is an even better flyer, dunker, and scorer than Michael Jordan. This former Tar Heel lacks Jordan’s swagger and poise during playoff games.

The Eastern Conference teams have made its presence felt by making blockbuster trades and player signings in the free agency. The Boston Celtics has added another veteran All Star player in Rasheed Wallace and as well as the return of Kevin Garnett from knee injury. LeBron James has another future Hall of Fame in Shaquille O’Neal to give the Cavaliers a formidable lineup especially in the frontcourt. The Magic eliminated the Cavs with the domination of Dwight Howard in the paint. The Toronto Raptors made some trades and signed European-breed NBA players to complement Chris Bosh for an NBA Finals stint. The competition is getting harder in the East. The Orlando Magic has a young and talented roster for this upcoming NBA season.

In last Wednesday preseason game with the Miami Heat, Carter had 8 points on 2 for 11 in the field and three assists in 22 minutes of play for his new team. Carter made 19 points in beating the Houston Rockets 113-104 on Friday night to give the Magic a 3-0 record in the preseason.

The NBA season has not started yet but Carter made an excellent impression to his new team. Will Vinsanity spell a difference in Orlando’s return to the NBA Finals?

The NBA has issued a new guideline to disallow the use of Twitter and other social media sites during the games. Players, team officials, and staff are prohibited to use their cellphones and other communication devices 45 minutes before the game until such the their responsibilities are finished. The memo includes halftime break.

The NBA has more than 1.4 million followers on Twitter alone. Many NBA players such as Charlie Villanueva, Shaquille O'Neal and others tweets before games and during halftime breaks to give unsolicited statements.

However, the policy does not include penalties for violations of the rule and teams permitted to establish their own policies on team practices and other activities.

Golden State Warriors warring with each other?

It all started with Stephen Jackson’s demand for a trade to get out of the Warriors roster. He was fined $25,000 by the NBA as players can not make trade requests in public. Jackson is the Warriors leading scorer with 20.7 points per game last season.

This was one of the Warriors problems before training camp started. Until another snag on Golden State’s training camp started regarding the relationship of veteran guard Monta Ellis with rookie guard Stephen Curry playing alongside him.

This was one of the drama highlights in the Warriors tumultuous off-season with its players on Day 1 of their training camp. Ellis answered emphatically, a question by media covering the camp that Curry and his self will not be able to play together inside the court. Somebody then pointed to Coach Don Nelson believes that both guards can play together. Ellis answered resoundingly that the Warriors can not win games if Coach Nellie insists that both he and the rookie guard play together. I think Ellis has no ill-feelings with his new rookie teammate but with his coach demands to let them play together.

By the sound of Ellis statements, it seems that the team will implode right off the start – start of the Warriors training camp. It seems that Coach Nellie will have his hands full to contain all these behaviors and attitudes of his All Star players. It might be the start of something bigger than the trade Jackson is asking from Golden State’s front office. Will it be a war of the coach and his prodigal All Stars? Can the Warriors’ settle all these differences before the new NBA season opens?

Shaq Traded to Cavs

Lebron and Shaq will be teammates in Cleveland in the 2010 NBA season.

The Cavaliers have agreed in principle to acquire Shaquille O'Neal from the Suns for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, an NBA source confirmed late Wednesday night.

Phoenix also will receive a second-round pick in Thursday's draft and cash. The deal was first reported by ESPN and Yahoo! Sports.

O'Neal has been on the Cavaliers' radar since February, when Cleveland had discussions with Phoenix about acquiring the 15-time All-Star center before the trading deadline. The Cavs' struggles in the Eastern Conference finals against Orlando -- specifically with Magic center Dwight Howard -- increased the urgency for Cleveland GM Danny Ferry to seek out a center who can defend Howard one-on-one.

He found an answer in the 37-year-old O'Neal, a four-time champion who had a resurgent year with Phoenix last season, averaging 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds in 75 games, his most appearances since 1999-2000. The acquisition of O'Neal doesn't hurt the Cavs' plan to pursue a top free agent in 2010, either: O'Neal's $20 million salary comes off the books after next season.
The deal for O'Neal is the latest move by Cleveland in its attempt to build a strong supporting cast around LeBron James, who can become a free agent in 2010. Last offseason, the Cavaliers bolstered the backcourt by dealing for Mo Williams. The point guard had an All-Star season but struggled in Cleveland's six-game loss to Orlando.

Neither Wallace or Pavlovic is likely to play for the cost-cutting Suns. Only $1.5 million of Pavlovic's 2009-2010 contract is guaranteed and the Suns will likely cut him to save $3.5 million. Wallace was contemplating retirement after the season and the deal to Phoenix -- a team with no chance to win the NBA championship next season -- may push him out the door. If the Suns can negotiate a fair buyout of his $14 million contract, Wallace will likely take it, saving Phoenix owner Robert Sarver several million dollars in the process.

Of greater concern is how the Shaq trade affects Phoenix's ability to extend the contract of Steve Nash. The two-time MVP, a free agent in 2010, has said he will wait and see what moves the Suns make before deciding whether to re-sign. Phoenix GM Steve Kerr met with Nash and his agent, Bill Duffy, in New York last week.

Lakers vs Magic NBA Final series: Game 2 scouting report

Kobe Bryant overwhelmed the Orlando Magic with his 40-point career high explosion in Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Finals. Kobe has morphed into his young age game with the mind set of a seasoned MVP basketball player in this game, giving the Lakers a 100-75 win to lead the Final series 1-0. Dwight Howard and the Magic were not able to contain his 48-minutes basketball brilliance on both ends of the court. The Black Mamba flirted with a triple-double registering 40 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assist.

Orlando's players now understand what that is all about, as they can now appreciate the differences between a conference final and the Finals. It would be easy to say their poor shooting from the perimeter was the reason they got killed in Game 1, but it was their 15-of-54 shooting from inside the arc that doomed them. Stan Van Gundy clearly has some adjustments to consider, but the biggest message he will give his guys is: "Fellas, we just have to make some shots."

Adjustments

Orlando Magic

When Orlando has struggled offensively this postseason, normally it was a result of too few touches for Dwight Howard. That lack of touches allows the opposing defense to keep its basic structure, and against the Lakers, this became a problem. But it wasn't the only issue the Magic had on offense.

In addition to not establishing Howard enough early in the clock, the Magic players seemed tentative in many of their actions. Guys held the ball for too long, again allowing Lakers defenders to stay in good spots. Players jogged to set screens too often, unsure of what exactly the ball handler wanted. This shortened the clock on many possessions, a fatal blow against a team with the length of the Lakers. And the ball handlers didn't attack off screens once they were set, rarely getting penetration and forcing the Lakers into breaking out of their standard defense.

The three keys in terms of execution for Orlando's offense are: feed Howard repeatedly, move the ball quickly off screens and dribble drives to try to get paint penetration, and finish paint shots.

Rashard Lewis has a tendency to try to finesse drives to the basket instead of attacking with toughness to draw the foul. It would be wise for him to do the latter. He has attacked the basket on many drives this postseason. But it just so happens that they all came before Thursday's Game 1. When Orlando runs ball screens to drag Andrew Bynum off Howard, Pau Gasol moves to Howard and Bynum switches to Lewis. If the Magic are patient, they can isolate Bynum on the perimeter. But they have to move the ball quickly to prevent the switchback first before they slow it down and take advantage of the mismatch. Recognizing is the key.

Tony Battie's lack of an outside shot allows Gasol to hang back and zone up inside. Orlando needs to space better opposite the ball, and when they get a ball reversal they can drive at Gasol, who will have more ground to cover. Too often Orlando's perimeter player was rotated too much toward the center, allowing one defender to cover two near the middle of the floor and the wing. Flattening to the corner with one shooter and placing the other higher on the wing can earn easier corner 3s.

Howard is best when facing up Bynum or Gasol, but he needs to attack more quickly after he gets the ball. Attacking toward the middle is his best option, as it allows easier kickouts when L.A. sends defenders down to him. If he goes baseline, it needs to be fast and explosive, so the second defender doesn't have time to get down there. L.A.'s length inside is a factor here.

Defensively, the Magic did not play with either force or urgency and got killed in the paint. Before worrying about guarding Kobe, they first have to build a stronger wall around the rim without relying solely on Howard's shot-blocking talents. Using quicker feet, stronger forearms, harder fouls and smarter rotations, they can accomplish this.

Orlando is content with a high volume of shots from Kobe Bryant, as long as they aren't putting him on the foul line as well. But they may have to send a double-team at him, as they did with Paul Pierce in the Boston series, if they sense him going into "Mamba mode."

Look for increased emphasis on the Magic's defense after dead balls and coming out of timeouts, as they did not lock in immediately and gave up quick points coming out of breaks. Their failures in these situations were clearly a result of the bright lights of the Finals stage, and these situations are sure to be addressed in their preparation for Game 2.

The best defensive statement the Magic can make in Game 2 is a few hard fouls early in the game to let the Lakers know they are in for a fight.

Los Angeles Lakers

When Gasol has to get back to protect the paint to slide over to Howard, someone has to find Lewis when he runs to the corner. Gasol can't protect the rim and close out Lewis.

Despite all of the attention given to Bynum, Gasol and Lamar Odom for their individual defense on Howard, the Lakers' defense of Howard started well before he ever touched the ball. Lakers perimeter defenders made contact with Howard in transition and at the start of his rolls to the basket after a ball screen. By doing this, they not only attempted to impede his progress, but also crowded him and let him know he was surrounded by gold jerseys. Watch out for this to continue in Game 2.

Each of Howard's individual defenders played him differently in Game 1, and this rotation of adversaries, designed to prevent Howard from getting into a consistent rhythm, will be on display again in Game 2.

Bynum will be content to allow Howard to catch the ball and then back off to allow Howard to face up and come right at him. Bynum will attempt to hold his ground at the rim. His fouls in Game 1 came on slapdowns and reach-ins when Howard beat him off the dribble.

Gasol attempted to deny Howard the catch, beating him to spots and then trying to deny and front. Gasol then used his quickness when Howard made the catch, playing him tighter and drawing two offensive fouls. With Howard expected to be more aggressive in Game 2, Gasol will once again look to anticipate Howard's power moves to the basket and draw the charge. Odom will play behind and defend him straight-up.

Once Howard made the catch and began his move in Game 1, Lakers help defenders were digging in the lane, cheating toward Howard and reaching and crowding him as he made his move. Look for this to continue in Game 2, with an occasional double-team thrown in to keep Howard guessing.

Trevor Ariza and Luke Walton will continue their tag team on Hedo Turkoglu. They will try to take away the middle on his catches and attempt to steer his drives toward the baseline and the corner. Tukoglu's only 3-pointer in Game 1 came on an overaggressive drive help by Ariza in the first quarter, so look for Ariza and Walton to shade him a little closer in Game 2 to prevent a possible 3-point barrage.

The Lakers' offense in Game 2 can't depend on Bryant's acrobatics, so expect to see an early emphasis on getting the ball inside to Bynum and Gasol. Bynum's size and offensive skill make him a handful for Howard. The Lakers will try to put Howard in position to defend and risk early foul trouble.

L.A. got 15 offensive rebounds in Game 1, eight of those coming from Bynum, Gasol and Odom. Look for the offensive glass to be a continued point of emphasis in Game 2, especially if Howard is in shot-blocking mode.

With the Magic likely to increase attention on Bryant in Game 2, the Lakers must get crisp ball movement and good offensive spacing, which will then allow L.A. shooters to spot up for 3-point shots on ball reversal. The Lakers only took nine 3-pointers in Game 1, so look for the Magic to test L.A.'s 3-point shooting ability in Game 2.

LA Lakers vs Orlando Magic: Another Magical NBA Finals Upset?

With the LA Lakers vs Orlando Magic NBA Finals series to set off on Thursday, many NBA and basketball pundits will have different analysis of this series on how the teams will win the championship. The basketball world has anticipated a Kobe-LeBron match up in the finals.

However, Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic mystified everyone as they defeated the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, 4-2, and reach the NBA Finals for the second time in franchise history. A magical run for a team that was not expected to reach the second round of the playoffs because of the injury to its superstar pointguard Jameer Nelson, a mid-season player trades, and a tumultuous playoff outburst from Howard against his coach, Stan Van Gundy.

The LA Lakers were expected to reach the Finals at the start of training camp with most of its players returning to play for Phil Jackson. Everyone is healthy including center Andrew Bynum, who recovered from an injury sustained during the regular season. Kobe Bryant was able to play on both ends of the court and brought so much energy to his teammates.

The Lakers (65-17) is the second best team in the NBA for the regular season. Nevertheless, the Kobe and his teammates were like a bunch of kids bullied by the neighborhood thugs. Ron Artest and the Houston Rockets played the Lakers until Game 7 of their semifinal round in the playoff. Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets were roughhousing the Kobe and his teammates in the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers beat the Nuggets 4-2 to reach their 30th NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.

As for the Magic, coach Stan Van Gundy shouldn’t be worried that the Lakers own the homecourt advantage in the best-of-7 series that will follow the 2-3-2 format. After all, Orlando bumped off Boston and Cleveland without the homecourt edge. There is a slight twist, however, in that the Lakers will host Games 1 and 2 then, if necessary, Games 6 and 7, meaning the Magic will host Games 3 and 4 and if necessary, Game 5.

In a tight Finals duel, it’s extremely difficult to win three games in a row even at home. That means to win the title, Orlando may need to win twice on the road assuming the Lakers steal one on the Magic’s court.

But if you ask Dwight Howard and his troops about the challenge of winning twice on the road in the playoffs, they’ll probably say it’s no big deal. They did it against Philadelphia in the first and Boston in the second.

In the 76ers series, Orlando lost Game 1 at home but took out Philadelphia, 100-98, in Game 4 and 114-89, in Game 6, both on the road. In the Boston series, the Magic socked it to the Celtics in Game 1, 95-90, and did it again on the road in Game 7, 101-82. Along the way, the Magic lost Game 4, 95-94, at home so Van Gundy’s squad isn’t exactly invulnerable at home.

The Lakers are 12-6 in the playoffs so far with two losses at home. They lost Game 1 to Houston, 100-92, and Game 2 to Denver, 106-103, both at the Staples Center – indicating a weakness to defend their homecourt in the early stages of both series. Against Orlando, it’s vital for Los Angeles to win Games 1 and 2 before the series swings to Magic town.

Like Orlando, Los Angeles is tough on the road, too. The Lakers beat Utah once on the Jazz court, Houston twice on the Rockets court and Denver once on the Nuggets court. The icing on the cake was Los Angeles’ 119-92 demolition of Denver in Game 6 on the Nuggets floor to seal the deal.

The Lakers’ championship experience will be a huge factor in the series. Jackson and the late Red Auerbach are tied in the NBA honor roll with most titles by a coach at nine apiece. If LA beats Orlando, Jackson will become the all-time coaching leader with 10 championships. In all, Jackson has coached in 11 Finals, losing to Detroit in 2004 and Boston last season. This is his 12th Finals appearance as a coach.

For Bryant, it will be his coming out party as he tries to win his first ring without Shaq O’Neal watching his back. He came close last year but the Celtics, not the Lakers, were destined to win. This time, destiny is calling the Lakers.

For sure, it won’t be easy sailing for the Lakers. Last year, LA couldn’t get the job done against Boston because the Lakers had no antidote for Kevin Garnett. Now, big Andrew Bynum is in harness and he’ll definitely contribute in making life a little difficult for Howard in the middle.

How to address Howard is Jackson’s challenge. The Lakers start with Pau Gasol at power forward and Bynum at center so they’ve got a pair of bigs to keep Howard busy. But Gasol is a finesse operator, not a banger, and Jackson might give burly D. J. Mbenga, who played for Dallas in the 2006 Finals, a crack at testing Howard’s strength. Bynum is too raw and foul-prone to consistently provide Howard a threat on both ends.

Another Jackson problem is Rashard Lewis who has excellent three-point range for a 6-10 “small” forward. Trevor Ariza, a tough defender, will be given the task to shadow Lewis no doubt. Orlando’s other forward 6-10 Hedo Turkoglu is also a sharpshooter from the perimeter but Gasol or Lamar Odom or Luke Walton should be able to locate him.

The bench will play a major role in the series. Van Gundy’s shock troopers include the vastly-improved Mickael Pietrus, guard Anthony Johnson, 6-11 Marcin Gortat and hardly-used veterans Tony Battie, Adonal Foyle and Tyronn Lue. But the Lakers second unit of Odom, Walton, Jordan Farmar, Shannon Brown and Sasha Vujacic is far superior.

Orlando hasn’t played in the Finals since the O’Neal era in 1995 and that appearance was forgettable as the Houston Rockets crushed the Magic, then coached by Brian Hill, in four straight.

Bryant will be unstoppable in the Finals because the Magic won’t be able to hold down his teammates. If Orlando throws a double or triple team on Kobe, expect the other Lakers to show what they can do. Orlando just isn’t deep enough to match up man-for-man and in the end, Bryant will dominate either by scoring or passing. Besides, Jackson is too smart to lose to a Finals newcomer (Van Gundy) with the odds stacked in his favor.

It will be a game played between a team out to redeem themselves and another young team playing with destiny to clinch their first ever NBA Finals championship trophy. The series could be over in five.

Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant will face each other in the NBA Finals beginning Thursday at Staples Center, Los Angeles. The Kobe-LeBron face-off fizzled out, instead Superman and his bunch of magical teammates will try to win the NBA championship after 14 years of going back to the Finals.

Howard and the Orlando Magic eliminated the Cleveland Cavaliers in game 6 of their Eastern conference finals, 103-90. It was a defining moment for the Magic after losing their superstar pointguard Jameer Nelson to injury. The Magic are a bunch of overachieving basketball heroes with no Finals experience.

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will play in their 30th Finals appearance. This is also their second consecutive appearance in the NBA Finals after losing to the Boston Celtics last season's NBA Finals. It will be redemption time for the Lakers.

Kobe and the Lakers dominated their regular season, 2-0, and also have the homecourt advantage throughout the Finals.

Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers will advance to their 30th NBA Finals appearance in the post-Shaq era by eliminating the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 of the NBA Western Conference Finals, 119-92, at Pepsi Center, Denver.

Kobe and the Lakers were in their best postseason game after playing 18 games in the playoff against the Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, and Denver Nuggets. The game was a clear manifestation of the Lakers serious bid to win the NBA Championship this season after losing it to the Kevin Garnett-led Boston Celtics last year.

The game finale against the formidable, pesky Denver Nuggets was their most complete team effort of the postseason on both ends of the courts. Kobe was in his MVP-like tallying 35 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds in 42 minutes of Lakers’ basketball. He was complemented by his teammates most especially by Trevor Ariza with 17 points, Lamar Odom contributing 20 points off the bench, and the surprise package in Luke Walton with 10 points (breakout game of the playoffs) – after hounding Carmelo Anthony most of the game. As usual, Pau Gasol - the most consistent Laker after Kobe - had another solid all-around game with 20 points, 12 caroms, and six dimes in 42 minutes of action.

Carmelo Anthony finished with 25 points, while Chauncey Billups could only amassed 10 points in 39 minutes of action. J.R. Smith contributed with 24 points for the Nuggets. The Lakers reserves outscored the Nuggets bench, 40-34, to cap their court brilliance Saturday night. The Lakers will get their much-needed rest and wait for the winner of the Orlando Magic – Cleveland Cavaliers series before the NBA Finals begin on Thursday.

Confidence. Focus. Maturity. These were evident in Kobe Bryant and the Lakers game for the rest of the 48 minutes NBA basketball which they hope to sustain in winning the coveted NBA championship.

Kobe bushwhack Denver Nuggets in Game 3

Kobe Bryant made crucial free throws and MVP-like plays down the stretch to beat the Denver Nuggets, 103-97 for a 2-1 lead in the NBA Western Conference Finals.

Bryant made a 24-foot three point shot over J.R. Smith with 1:08 remaining in the regulations to give the Lakers a 96-95 lead over the Nuggets. Kobe scored 41 points and made 5-of-6 free throws to capped his sterling performance.

Denver Nuggets was not able to execute well their offensive plays and committed a costly inbound turnover which sparks the Lakers finishing run with Kobe and Trevor Ariza making free throws in the last 0:36 seconds of play in the regulation. Kenyon Martin made an errant inbound pass to Carmelo Anthony intercepted by Ariza. Anthony fouled Ariza putting him on the line and giving the Lakers a 99-95 lead with 36 seconds left.

In the ensuing play, Chauncey Billups made two free throws cutting down the lead at 99-97. However, Bryant sank two more free throws with 22 seconds left to pad Lakers lead. Billups missed a potential 3-pointer and Bryant sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left.

Carmelo Anthony paced the Nuggets with 21 points after sitting most of the 2nd half with foul troubles and fouling out with 36 seconds remaining in the game. He was 4-for-13 in the field for his worst performance of the postseason. Denver led most of the first half with heads-up plays of Chris Anderson, Nene, and Dahntay Jones. J.R. Smith closed out the first half with a three point buzzer beater over Sasha Vujacic. He drew a technical foul for thrashing Vujacic after the play.

Anderson chipped in 15 points, Billups with 18, and the duo of Nene and Smith with 10 points apiece in a losing effort for the Nuggets. This is the Nuggets first home lost since March 9. They had been dominant at Pepsi Center in the playoffs against the New Orleans Hornets and Dallas Mavericks with a winning average of 17.5 points.

Pau Gasol had another dominating performance with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and a block for 43 minutes of play. Ariza chipped in 16 points in spite of an injury with 7:18 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Billups' made a four-point play on a Bryant foul gave Denver an 89-86 lead. However, Paul Gasol hit back-to-back jumpers over Nene to put the Lakers back on top, and Bryant's twinner made it 92-91 with three minutes left in the game.

LeBron James made a 25-foot prayer-of-a-shot in the last second of the 2009 NBA Eastern Conference Finals for a 96-95 win to tie the series at 1-1 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic at Quicken Loans Arena.

LeBron scored a game high 35 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists to cap his astounding performance in the end game. He made the play after Magic's Hedo Turkoglu converted a two point jumper in the last 13.5 seconds of the game to give Orlando a two point lead with a second remaining in the game. The Cavaliers sued for a timeout and designed a play for James to pop out over the top of the key for the twinner with Mo Williams issuing the pass from the sidelines.

LeBron made the play after committing a traveling turnover with 30 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 93-all. Orlando called a timeout and was able to designed a play for Turkoglu.

Magic's Courtney Lee made a 10-foot running jumper in the last 5:26 to seized their first lead of the game at 86-84 after trailing the game as much as 16 points. Heads-up plays by Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis, Michel Pietrus, Turkoglu, and Lee cut down the lead of Cleveland after halftime.

Lewis had 23 points for the Magic. Howard chipped in 10 points and a game high 18 rebounds in a losing effort.

Williams contributed 19 points for the Cavs, while the duo of Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao scored with 12 points apiece and alternately defended Howard in the paint.

Game 3 will be played in Amway Arena, Orlando Florida.

Button leads the F1 World Drivers championship with 41 points followed by his Brawn-Mercedes teammate Rubens Barrichello at 27 points. Sebastian Vettel of RBR-Renault is in third place with 23 points after 5 major races in Australia, Malaysia, China, Bahrain, and Spain. Button was able to win first place finishes in 4 out of 5 races for the 2009 season using a Ross Brawn Mercedes F1 car.

Grand Prix De Monaco will have 78 laps of race at Monaco’s marina with circuit length of 3.340 km and a race distance of 260.520 km. Ferraris’ Michael Schumacher records the fastest lap here at Monaco in 1:14.439 hours during the 2004 season. The race will run through the city streets of Monaco and runs parallel to its bustling marina and hotels.

The Denver Nuggets overwhelmed Los Angeles Lakers, 106-103, in their Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Finals at Staples Center. Carmelo Anthony torched the Lakers with his game high 34 points after losing game 1 in their best of seven games playoff.

Denver’s forward Linas Kleiza had a breakout game going 4 of 7 from the 3-point stripe for 16 points in 22 minutes of play. He was also very active on both ends of the court with 8 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant had a team high 32 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in a 40 minutes hardcourt action. Trevor Ariza scored 20 points, Pau Gasol contributed 17 points, and Lamar Odom registered 10 points in a losing effort. The Lakers bench was routed by the Nuggets bench in both offensive and defensive efforts.

Chauncey Billups had another sterling performance with a 27 point production going 13 of 16 from the free throw line. Kenyon Martin had 16 points and 3 steals in 35 minutes of action.

The Nuggets were able to maintain their composure in winning the game and squaring the series to 1-1. They were too scrappy in the opening quarter with some turnovers but regained their poise on heads-up play by Billups, Anthony, and Kleiza. The series will return to the Nuggets’ Pepsi Center for game 3 of the best of seven NBA Western Conference Finals.

Orlando Magic Mystify Cavaliers

The Orlando Magic mystified LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of their NBA Eastern Conference Finals. Rashard Lewis helped the Magic pull one out of their hat, saving his best for the second half and hitting the winning 3 with 14.7 seconds left.

Dwight Howard scored 30 points, Rashard Lewis added 22 and the Orlando Magic rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to hand James and the Cavaliers their first loss of the postseason, 107-106 on Wednesday night in the Eastern Conference finals opener.

James finished with a career-high and franchise playoff record 49 points, eight assists and six rebounds, but the league MVP limped off the floor after Cleveland's loss -- just its third in 46 home games. The Cavaliers looked stunned. And for good reason. No longer untested, no longer unbeaten. The Cavaliers finally met their match in the playoffs.

Lewis made a 3-pointer with 14.7 seconds left and the Magic, who dethroned the champion Boston Celtics in seven games in the previous round, survived two shots by Cleveland in the closing seconds. Williams missed a catch-and-shoot jumper off a jump ball as the horn sounded, dropping the Cavs to 8-1 in the postseason. Cavs guard Delonte West missed an open 3-pointer with five seconds remaining.

The Magic handed the Cavaliers their first loss of this postseason (8-1). The Cavs were playing for the first time since May 11, and teams with at least eight days rest between playoff games have now lost five of seven games.

Howard broke one of the shot clocks with a dunk in the opening minutes of the game.
Hedo Turkoglu scored 15 points with 14 assists for Orlando.

Cleveland gave this one away. The Cavaliers lost their grip on the game with a stagnant third quarter that carried into the fourth. Also, the Magic shot 55 percent from the floor -- 59 percent in the second half -- against the league's top defensive team.

Orlando, which went 2-1 vs. Cleveland in the regular season, took its first lead at 85-84 with 10:06 left when Anthony Johnson buried a 3-pointer from the left corner. The bucket seemed to suck the air out of the raucous building and Cavs coach Mike Brown quickly called a timeout to stop the Magic's run and get James back in.

The Magic, though, kept making big shots with Lewis hitting a jumper with 31.6 seconds left to give Orlando a 104-103 lead.

James then drove and scored on a runner while drawing a sixth foul on Howard, who added 13 rebounds. James completed the three-point play for a 106-104 lead but Lewis came down and nailed his 3-pointer over a closing Anderson Varejao.

On Cleveland's last possession, West missed his open 3 but James was able to tie up Turkoglu for a jump ball. James tipped it behind him to Williams, but his last-second prayer hit the back of the rim and the Cavs walked off knowing they had given up home-court advantage for this round.

Game 2 is Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena, which fell eerily silent after the Magic's win.

Attacking the Net

EVERY BADMINTON PLAYER KNOWS IT: the net can be your friend or enemy. Attacking the net requires a lot of shot perfection, patience, and practice. The net is a potent ally to those who can deliver the smoothest drops, smash drops or drives but an adversary to those susceptible to ill-angled shots that hardly get to cross the opponent’s side of the court.

Netting is as important as powerful smashes and drives in completing a game strategy as it sets up the position for the kill by tempting the opponent to lift the shuttlecock. It also breaks up the opponent’s position and prevents them from getting offensive.

For instance, a long-range drop that falls right at the side corner of the net can sometimes be as lethal as powerful smash that smacks right in the center of the court. Most especially when the opponent least expects it.

Ideally, net plays should bring the shuttlecock as close to the net as possible, forcing the opponent to move closer to the net and create a space somewhere in the court for a chance to kill. Once the shuttlecock crosses the net, it should be kept as low as possible - or otherwise simply encourage an attack from the other side. The shot tries to avoid giveaway shots.

Whether executing long-range drops or smash drops from the back or doing counter-drops in front, it is encourage targeting the sides of the net. By dropping the shuttlecock at the side, the opponent nearest to the net is forced to move towards one end of the court, breaking up the offensive front-back position at the center.

There are two ways to execute the drop shots: either to push or to slice.

To push the shot is to hit the shuttlecock in the same way as one would throw a dart. Or when one is set to smash except that instead of one powerful blow where you shift body weight, you control the intensity of the blow so that the shuttlecock only lands near the net. Use the wrist to tap the shuttlecock - lightly – and guide its descent towards the net. To slice the shot is to use quick wrist movements to chop off the shuttlecock towards a smooth fall. The push shot provides a downward momentum.

Kobe and Lakers Draw First Blood

Kobe and the Los Angeles Lakers drew first blood against the Denver Nuggets in their Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Western Conference Finals at Staples Center, LA, 106-104. He took over the game in the last 30 seconds with six successive free throws to finished with a game high 40 points.

It was a see-saw battle in the fourth quarter between the teams with the Nuggets leading most of the way. The Lakers kept their poised in the end game with Derek Fisher, Pau Gasol and Travis Ariza making some heads-up plays in the homestrecth.

Pau Gasol had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers, who were trailing by seven points in the fourth quarter. Gasol’s two free throws tied the game for the last time at 99 before Bryant started his closing streak at the line, offsetting a 3-pointer by Chauncey Billups and a free throw by J.R. Smith.

Carmelo Anthony scored 39 points and Billups added 18 for the Nuggets, who had played since last Wednesday after demolishing Dallas Mavericks in five games.

Game 2 is set on Thursday at Staples Center. The Nuggets have lost 11 successive playoff games to the Lakers, including a first-round sweep last season.

Bryant, who was 9 for 9 from the line in the fourth quarter, made two for a 101-99 lead with 30 seconds left. Trevor Ariza stole the inbounds pass near midcourt and the Lakers were able to run the clock down to 10 seconds when Bryant made two more free throws.

Billups hit a booming 3-pointer to get the Nuggets to 103-102 with 5 seconds left, but then Anthony fouled Bryant, who made his final two foul shots.

Smith made one free throw with 3.2 seconds left and intentionally missed the second one as. Bryant grabbed the game’s last rebound.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets will square off in the 2009 NBA Western Conference Finals best of seven games starting on Tuesday at the Staples Center, Los Angeles. The Lakers demolished the pesky Houston Rockets in a Game 7 win, 89-70, on Sunday. It will be Kobe vs Anthony in the Western Conference Finals.

The Lakers will face the Nuggets starting Tuesday in a best of seven conference finals. It will be a battle between last year’s NBA Finals runner-up and a bunch of underrated NBA superstars out on a mission to the NBA Finals. A preview of Lakers vs Nuggets is based on the data gathered between the two NBA teams in the current season.

The Overachieving Denver Nuggets (54-28)

Denver Nuggets has overachieved its performance for the current NBA season with a 54-28 record and astounding postseason wins over New Orleans Hornets (4-1) and Dallas Mavericks (4-1).

The trifecta of Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony, and J.R. Smith combined for a total of 65.4 team points in 10 postseason games against New Orleans and Dallas. The Nuggets has a postseason field goal average of .503 against opponents .438 FG%. The team has a 3-point accuracy of .429 average.

Denver is very active on the defensive end with a team average of 9.50 steals per outing and 5.20 blocks per game. Chris Andersen has 1.89 blocks per game in 21.2 minutes of playing time. However, in the rebounding department, the Nuggets can only pluck 39.4 caroms per outing.

Coach George Karl was able to make use of his 12 man roster to provide quality minutes on the hardcourt. Melo, Billups, K-Mart, and Nene were able to log in more than 30 minutes of playing time, together with different teammates filling up supporting roles for the team. This gives the team a different dimension because of the involvement of its bench. On the offensive end, both Billups and Melo were very consistent in their production and leadership on the team while teammates support them with quality minutes. Denver is very tenacious in team defense with Nene, K-Mart, Melo, and its backcourt of Billups and Smith providing the spark for the team.

Denver Nuggets thrive on team defense and offensive sets designed for everyone on the floor. Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith, and Nene were able to develop the maturity they lack in last year's NBA season. The midseason trade of Chauncey Billups with Allen Iverson brought wonders for the team. He was able to bring stability, maturity, and championship experience they need for a run to the NBA Finals.

The Mercurial Los Angeles Lakers (65-17)

The Los Angeles Lakers were able to hurdle over the hump against the Houston Rockets in a postseason series of drama and hardcourt basketball. The undermanned, undersized Rockets were able to stretched the Lakers to a gruelling Game 7 in their semifinal match.

The Lakers showed a lot of character, poise, and heart in its 89-70 win. Kobe displayed a lot of class complemented with lots of efforts from his teammates especially Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom.

They were able to dominate the game by controlling the boards on both ends of the court. The Lakers defensive presence was a major factor in this win. The Lakers' guards were able to contain the Rocket's Brooks from dictating the tempo of the game. Kobe created some plays for his teammates as he was well guarded by both Artest and Battier. (If you happen to read my previous blog, I mentioned that if the Lakers are able to control the boards then chances are they will win the game.)

The Lakers have shooting averages on the field at .469 with 3 point accuracy of .389. However, they are very active at the boards with 42.7 caroms per outing. Pau Gasol is very active on both ends of the court grabbing 3.5 (OFF) and 7.3 (DEF) rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe is still the top scorer of the team at 27.4 points per games. He also has averages of 2.17 steals per game and 4.5 assists per outing.

This NBA Western Conference Finals will go down on who will execute their play consistently and impose their defensive presence until Game 7. It will not be Kobe vs Anthony but an attrition of basketball wizardry between these two teams.

Lakers vs Rockets Game 7 Live!

A few hours from now, one of the most exciting NBA post season game will happen between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets in a do-or die Game 7 match. Unstoppable offense vs impenetrable defense. Kobe vs Artest. Gasol vs Yao Ming. Veterans vs Youth. There are a lot of plots to this thrilling Game 7 of the Western semifinal between two of the most exciting teams in the NBA.

Can Kobe be stopped with different phalanx of defenders thrown against him? Will the Lakers’ backcourt generals of Fisher and Farmar immobilize the speedy and rising sophomore star of Houston Rocket’s Aaron Brooks? Or can the Lakers bench hold its ground against the rising stars of the Rockets?

My own personal assessment of this game is that whoever will play a good defensive game will win Game 7. If the Rockets can hold its ground against Kobe, and neutralize the Lakers bench into mere spectators, then the Yao Ming-led Rockets will go to the Western conference finals against the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets will have to play an honest- to-goodness defense against Phil Jackson’s boys. The Rockets will also have to perfectly set its offensive plays to involve all of its players with Rick Adelman’s run-and-gun system to win this game. Yao Ming is a doubtful starter for this game with a micro fracture on his foot. Houston’s shooters must be able to hit their marks to open up some plays for their big men like Luis Scola and Carl Landry in the absence of Yao.

In order for the Lakers to win this game, Kobe should involve his other teammates in the scoring production department. The ball should be distributed among other Lakers to confuse the defense of Houston. Another area that the Lakers should give emphasis is the rebounding department. If Lamar Odom, Gasol and Bynum can control both boards, then it will be a walk in the park for Jackson and his purple-and-gold Lakers. Defense will also be a major factor for the Lakers to win.
